25/07/10 - SA President’s End of Season Report June 2010.
Compared to the 2008-9 season, this year has felt quite calm from
a presidential perspective, but quite a lot has been going on.
In this last season, we have trialled a slightly different format
for the State Titles, had numerous team alterations, held our
very own land based come’n’try day in 30 knots, assisted
with the sale of 4 boats that have been in hibernation and welcomed
their new owners into the fold and awarded the handicap trophy
to one of those boats.
The association has slowly but surely been working towards attracting
more sailors and in particular young families to the class. We
have grown our fleet from the 6 or 7 boats regularly racing 5
years ago when Andrew and I arrived in SA, to 10 or sometimes
12 boats on a state or club championship heat. The numbers aren’t
spectacular, but its a 30-50% increase, depending on which day
you count the competitors, so I believe we have had significant
growth. Read More (PDF)

04/02/10 - NS14 South Australian News
January has provided some excellent racing for the NS14s. Many
teams took the opportunity to swap positions in the boat for the
annual crew’s race. Up for grabs this year was the inaugural
“Best Crew” trophy, recently donated by immediate
past crew of Alternative Pathway Lisa Brock. With much at stake
(insurance premiums included!) teams that entered were Christine
and Bob in Sweet Little Rock’n’Roller, Daniel and
Deb in Powderburn, Kathryn and Dave in Alternative Pathway and
Tom and Chris in Liquid Insanity. The handicaps were set by general
agreement between all parties over lunch. The day was warm and
the breeze favourable, just the right amount for the inexperienced
to be in charge. The start was clean and I personally began to
breathe again once we got across the line incident free. By the
end of the first lap the small fleet had split in Christine and
Kathryn ahead of Dan and Tom. There was some questionable pole
work by the “novice” crews up front, but all in all
everything was going very smoothly. Incidentally, the cleat causing
pole work issues on Alternative Pathway has now been removed from
service. The lead changed leg by leg and was all tied up at the
last gybe mark between Kathryn and Christine with the bouy room
rule coming into effect. The result was decided on the gybe though
when Kathryn (the inside boat) capsized on the gybe, giving Christine
a clear run to the finish line. The Sweet Little Rock’n’Rollers
not only took out line honours, but also were winners on corrected
time, so well done to Christine and Bob, her able crew for the
day.
The rest of January has bought ample wind for consecutive weeks.
The courses set have provided hard windward work, offset by excellent
reaching conditions, in particular on the day of the TM Hardy
race with the reach along the beach to finish off the club. Those
of us lucky enough to hit that leg before the wind strengthened
further had the ride of our lives, with minimal amounts of hull
in the water and most of the crew hanging out of the boat in the
effort to keep it upright. Those that were a few minutes further
back copped a beating just trying to get to the finish line, resulting
in a few capsizes, but no lasting damage. The extra wind this
year has been welcomed by Alternative Pathway, resulting in 3
guns from 3 starts. Here’s hoping it holds up for the next
state heats at Adelaide on the first weekend in February.
Until next time
Kathryn
